Many times companies, organizations, universities, families, and even churches are recognized by “What” they do, make, look like, or act. Baptists are usually known by what they do when someone joins their church. “Baptists are those people that Baptize new believers.” And conversely Baptists describe other denominations by how they perform their ordinance of baptism: “Methodists sprinkle,” a Southern Baptist might say.
The Mercedes-Benz is easily recognized by what kind of cars they make- luxury cars. The Volkswagen company is known for making economical cars for everyday people, like its name indicates- a car for the folk. However, organizations, companies and even churches have more success with WHAT they do if they will start with WHY they do it.
Southwest Airlines started out to be an airline for the common man during a time when it was not uncommon for business men would fly dressed in suits. They became hugely successful by providing transportation for the common man when the most popular form of long range transportation for the everyday Joe was the bus. Southwest was only interested in low cost fares and convenient schedules.
The Worship ministry at North Shelby Baptist Church is more interested in WHY we do what we do in worship. If we get the Why right, then the How and What will fall into place.
It is my belief that the Worship Ministry exists in the WHY we worship. People who worship the Lord are changed through worship. They ask for forgiveness and are changed. They recognize the awesome wonder of God’s power, His grace, His love, study His Word and are changed into obedient followers of Him. When God’s people sing about God’s wonder, His faithfulness, His mighty acts, listen to His Word, unbelievers listen and their lives are changed, too. Many times our worship of God is an evangelistic tool for winning the lost.
Our WHY for worship here at North Shelby Baptist Church is to “Change Lives One Worship Experience at a Time.”
But the style of the music does not change lives. The beautiful sounds the choir and orchestra make are not responsible for changing lives. It is God’s Word that changes lives. We will constantly seek to change lives through the worship ministry by making God’s Word- His Bible the WHY of our ministry.
