As you read this, the North Shelby Baptist Church family is in the midst of Vacation Bible School. If you have volunteered for Vacation Bible School (VBS) before, you know that it is no vacation! It is at times chaotic, busy, loud, fun, and can be exhausting, but it is no vacation. It has been said that there is no kind of “tired” like “VBS tired”, and I would tend to agree. But it is the kind of tired you experience only after investing yourself in something that truly matters. It is a good kind of tired. And why do we spend so much effort and energy on children? Remember Jesus’ interaction with children in Mark 10:13-16: People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. Children matter because Jesus said they matter! We as a church body should invest ourselves in the children.
Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 12:27 and the rest of the chapter remind us of the unity and diversity found in the church body. “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” This is always true in the life of a local body of believers, but there are certain seasons when that fact is easier to observe than others. Vacation Bible School is one of those times. We have all these different people of different ages doing different jobs to accomplish a common goal. The building we gather in becomes a beehive of activity as all the different parts do their individual tasks to make things happen. Registering people, leading a group, teaching, singing, security, making snacks, working the screen and sound system, recreation, making crafts, and more! There is a beauty in watching the church work together and be the body of Christ. North Shelby Baptist is not the building at 4100 Belcher Drive. That is where the church gathers, as it has gathered at several locations before. North Shelby Baptist Church is the people loving God and one another, sharing Jesus with the world. Vacation Bible school just happens to be right here in our part of the world.
If your work schedule, health limitations, or other factors has kept you from serving up to this point, you can still help with Vacation Bible School. You can pray. Pray for strength and endurance for the workers. Pray for wisdom and guidance for Julie as she leads and directs. Pray that all the logistics would run smoothly. Pray that leaders would be able to clearly articulate the gospel message in a way that children can understand. Most importantly pray that children would come to understand the good news of Jesus and put their faith in Him. Pray that parents would as well. Also remember to pray for our Builders for Christ mission team serving this week in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They, too, are involved in the mission of loving God and one another, sharing Jesus with the world. What an exciting week for our church!
