When I was a boy, my dad would tell me often that God had great things in store for me. In my young mind I began to have visions of grandeur as I thought about my life as a sports star or as an inventor or as a doctor or scientist. I even had great visions of being the next Billy Graham.
At the age of 18 I surrendered my life to Gods call to the ministry. But even then, I was not sure what my dad meant. What were these great things that he continued to refer to that God had in store for me? I went to Samford University to discover more of what God had in store for me. From there I continued to Southwestern Seminary in pursuit of these great things as I prepared myself for ministry.
At 57 years of age, today I think I am finally realizing what my dad meant. He has gone on to be with the Lord, but his words still reverberate inside my head each and every day.
I am living out the great things that God has in store for me. What are these great things? I look into their faces every day. My beautiful wife. My two wonderful boys. And the people that I am honored to serve at North Shelby Baptist Church.
I’m not a sports star…I’ve never invented anything…and I am definitely not the next Billy Graham. But my dad was right. God did have great things in store for me. What greater things can there be than being a good husband, a good father and a good servant of the King?
In looking at Proverbs 3:5&6 I have come to realize that for God to direct us to the great things He has in store, we must trust Him with our entire heart…every part. These verses tell us that trusting in God with our whole heart will result in Him directing our paths to the goals in life He has set for us.
God has great things in store for US! We need to trust in Him allowing Him to direct us!
