FAQ’s

We are located at 4100 Belcher Dr., Birmingham, AL 35242. Meetings and classes are held in the Education Wing of North Shelby Baptist Church.

North Shelby Baptist Church sponsors North Shelby Christian Academy per Alabama state laws.

You can call the office to request more information at 205.995.9056, or email us directly at nsca@northshelbybaptist.org.

Our Administrator will receive and reply to each contact, usually within 24 hours or less.

Our Administrator is M. Michele Bradshaw, who graduated in 1996 with a B.S. in Architecture from Auburn University and practiced as an intern architect until she and her husband were blessed with their second child.

For the past several years she has taught upper maths and sciences for a small group of homeschool families. If you have questions about NSCA please contact her at nsca@northshelbybaptist.org.

The Administrator is typically at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Please Contact Us to schedule a time to meet.

We primarily serve Shelby County, including Chelsea, Sterrett, Wilsonville, Harpersville, Childersburg, Columbiana, Helena, Calera, Alabaster, Vincent, Sylacauga, and surrounding areas. Special consideration may be given to those outside of this area.

Fees for enrollment are listed on the PAYMENTS page of our site.

Additional costs may be incurred if you choose to use additional services (attend co-op classes, take a dual enrollment course, standardized testing, and the like). Families may also choose to participate in group field trips/activities with NSCA, and each family would be responsible for the costs for those attending. The expenses for additional services and field trips are optional.

We offer enrollment for second semester until the end of 3rd quarter of the current school year. Contact the administrator to discuss that possibility at nsca@northshelbybaptist.org.

We require families to attend one mandatory meeting per year. This is normally held during a Saturday morning in early August. However, we hold optional sessions throughout the year for support and sharing among families.

NSCA families sign up for Homeschool Reporting online and complete attendance reports and report cards at the end of each semester (Jan 31 for 1st semester and June 30 for 2nd semester), as well as document curriculum. Transcripts and records from previous schools are requested. Parents should read and agree to the Statement of Faith. NSCA high school students will be asked to maintain a portfolio of their work for review. Potential graduates will be asked to submit this portfolio as part of the credit review meeting at the beginning of their 12th grade year.

We recommend the ALEX standards which can be found here: http://alex.state.al.us/browseStand.php. Prior to 9th grade it is not as important to closely follow these standards. However, once in 9th grade, students should cover most of these courses to stay on track for college readiness.

Our homeschool students are allowed to participate in sports with Trinity Christian Athletics. This group allows eligible students, regardless of cover school, to participate in team sports. Check their website for further information. https://www.trinitychristiansports.com/

No, but we highly recommend it. We recommend that homeschooling families join HSLDA. The NSCA code is 210559. Even if you never experience legal trouble yourself, your HSLDA membership will help enable other homeschooling families to get the legal help they need and will help defend our right to homeschool here in Alabama. Membership in HSLDA also gives you personal access to the legal staff; HSLDA’s experienced high school, struggling learners, and early years consultants; selling privileges at the HSLDA Curriculum Market; and discounts through HSLDA’s PerX program. (For more information about HSLDA’s many benefits, see www.hslda.org.).
