Welcome to the year 2020! How did you start your year off? Were you surrounded by loved ones? Were you snuggled up asleep in bed? Perhaps you were watching the ball drop and you counted down until the New Year began? People start their year off in many different ways and I pray that as a church we start our year off by praying to study God’s Word and sharing the Gospel with people we meet.
What does the Bible say about studying God’s Word? Hebrews 4:12 reads, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” As you study God’s Word in the year 2020 remember that His Word is meant to guide and protect us while also revealing our sins so that we may be able to repent of our sins and ask for forgiveness.
Joshua 1:8 says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” On Sunday nights at 6:00 I teach Bible drill to the children. During Bible drill we memorize verses and study God’s Word. I always tell the children that memorizing God’s Word is so important because we might not have a Bible on hand but we will have God’s Word on our lips so that we can fight sin with scripture or we can use God’s Word to comfort us during good and bad times.
First as a church I pray that we study God’s Word and second I pray that we share the Gospel with people we meet. Matthew 28:19-20, the great commission, is the obvious scripture to look at when discussing sharing the Gospel, but instead let’s look at a parallel verse, Mark 16:15. Mark 16:15, states, “He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” It is fun to look at the authors of Matthew and Mark. Matthew is poetic and kind while Mark is short and sweet. Marks point is just as valid as Matthew. “Go into all the ____________ and preach the gospel to all creation.” Fill in the blank with your hometown, a neighbor, a friend, or a family member and challenge yourself to follow this command God has given you today. Please pray with me that in the year 2020 that our congregation will focus on studying God’s Word and sharing the Gospel with those we meet.
Your Servant in Christ,
