Practice What You Teach
Richard Kraus was a prolific author and teacher about recreation and leisure. He was one of the founding members of the Academy of Leisure Sciences and one of his books, Recreation and Leisure, was for several years required reading for most university students studying recreation.
This academician was also quite entertaining as a speaker and was a frequent guest on “The Today Show.”
Yet when Richard Kraus’s daughter was interviewed following her father’s death she told a reporter for The New York Times that her father had little time for recreation in his life. He was so busy teaching the subject of recreation that he sacrificed both personal recreation and leisure. Weekly the church teaches the Bible through Sunday School, Wednesday evening and weekday Bible Study classes and we have just completed and exciting week of Vacation Bible School. Also, all our of Sunday worship experiences always include a Bible teaching dimension. Unfortunately, many church leaders and workers often give more time to teaching others the Bible than they do personally studying the Bible for themselves. The Bible is a book to be studied before it is a book to be taught. If the only time we engage in intentional Bible study is when we are preparing a Sunday School or Bible study lesson, we are hypocritical. We evangelical Christians often say that we are Bible people, but often we are people who promote the Bible and talk about the Bible more than we personally study the Bible.
One of the criticisms that the unbelieving world makes about professing Christians is that we don’t practice what we preach and often their criticism is valid. I invite you to make Bible study a daily activity, not just something you do to prepare for Sunday. Don’t wait until tomorrow to start, begin today by doing the following:
Block out a minimum of 15 to 30 minutes with the television
and your cell phone turned off.
Ask God to guide your mind and your heart as you read.
Take a few notes as you read, don’t try to over do the
notes. Begin by just writing down the key truths you are
When you finish reading ask God to help you apply these
truths in your daily life.
May folks say that North Shelby is not only a Bible teaching
church but also a Bible practicing church.
See you Sunday,
Your interim pastor,
